Historic Mack's Fishing Camp's Airboat Tours in The Florida Everglades

Last year I  took the kids to Mack's Fish Camp in the Everglades and took some amazing pics,  I posted the article below in my blogger http://www.2brothersebizblog.blogspot.com/ and it was extremely popular.  I hope you enjoy it.
.

On Wednesday I went with my boys to Mack's Fishing Camp they had a blast fishing in the Everglades and riding on an airboat. Mack's Fishing Camp is located off of Krome Avenuein Miami, Florida where the Broward and Dade county borders.

My eight year old has become an enthusiastic fisherman thanks to Jeremy Wade's River Monsters program and is always asking me for fishing tips. Unfortunately, as a single mom who does not fish often, I am not much help. My other son enjoys the airboat ride more than the actual fishing.

In contrast to three other airboat tours my boys have been on, Mack's airboat tour was not a commercialized tourist trap. On the other tours we were herded onto an airboat with 10-15 people, rushed through a quickie tour then swiftly led to the gift shop. At the gift shop you purchase worthless, overpriced Everglades souvenirs especially if you’re with your kids - you just want them to stop the whining.

On Wednesday's airboat ride, Keith Jones the guide and co-owner, knew every bird and plant on the tour. He also took the time to teach the boys how to properly tie the line on a hook and cast. Needless to say, the boys loved it. The tour was more informative and family friendly. Mack’s Fishing Camp airboat tours are the real Everglades.

Why the difference? Unlike several of the airboat facilities in Dade and Broward Mack's Fishing Camp is run by two real "Gladesmen" and the business goes back 5 generations. They live on the camp with their family. My two sons fished on one of the docks and met several of the Jones brothers’ kids.

What is a gladesman? A gladesman is a member of a rural folk culture entirely associated to the Everglades. Gladesmen have been living near or in the Everglades for more than a century. Decades ago, they used the plentiful resources of the Everglades to make a living and for food. Gladesmen were once common in South Florida, but today gladesmen are scarce.

Mack's Fishing Camp is operated by faternal twins Keith and Marshal Jones. The Jones brothers grew up with the Everglades as their backyard sharing it with the snakes, alligators and other gladesmen. Mack's Fishing Camp was founded by the twins great-grandfather , Mack Jones Sr. in 1937.

They describe their childhood nostalgically as similar to a "Huck Finn" novel. They were raised by their grandmother Nell Jones (another Everglades' legend) and grandfather Mack Jr. They explored the Everglades romping barefoot and with a fishing pole ready to cast and reel in the immense variety of abundant fish wading in Everglades - check out this great article by Jeff Klinkenberg, a Tampa By Times Staff Writer who writes about Florida culture. Their grandfather Mack Jr. taught them to fish, gig for frogs, swim, hunt and take care of each other at a very young age.

As gladesmen they grew up learning the way of the Everglades, Today's, gladesmen, like Keith and Marshal Jones can describe many experiences and stories passed down from generation to generation. They were exposed to the gladesmen’s culture and knowledge of natural Glades environment by their fathers, mothers, grandfathers or grandmothers.

According to Laura Ogden, a Florida International anthropologist, gladesman had the uncanny skill to read the wilderness around them.   Gladesmen were able to scrutinized the seasonal changes in the area's game and analyzed the faint signs in this landscape - like subtle imprints in the mud, existence of particular birds, or distinct odor to pursue and hunt their prey. Their understanding of these signs and their integral involvement in this environment provided Gladesmen a clear-cut perception of the Everglades' intricate and diverse ecosystem. This was vital because the environment was fundamental to their survival and day-to-day existence.

Before Wednesday’s tour, I had no idea what a gladesmen was and never heard the word. I saw it on some of the signs when we were driving the dirt road to the entance and my son kept asking me what it was.

That night I goolged it and read this awesome Free digital pdf report. And Mack’s Fishing Camp’s website has several links that have fantastic articles about these early pioneers and their keen ability read the wilderness around them - another awesome article - Gladesmen; The Real Everglades. According to this article because of the gladesmen's generational knowledge of the land, Federal and State scientists and biologists routinely consult with them using their years of indigenous knowledge to help in ongoing studies focused on protecting the Everglades.

Because of Mack's Fishing Camp's the rich and unique heritage, the federal government has proposed that Mack's Fishing Camp be listed as a national historic site.

Last, but not least Mack's Fishing Camp is beautiful and the sunset in the Everglades is amazing. Take yours kids to visit this beautiful gem - and visit the Real Everglades you won't regret it.
